In early December heritage and civil society organizations from South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana organized together with CHwB and with support from Sida a planning workshop on Heritage Sites and Sustainable Tourism. The 5 day long workshop explored and developed links between heritage sites and sustainable development.
The workshop held in Maun, Botswana aimed to develop pilot projects for income generation activities to improve local communities' livelihoods, promote local sustainable development and community empowerment through participation in decision-making processes.
The projects targeted communities living within and around the Okavango Delta (Botswana), Mapungubwe (South Africa) and the Namib Desert (Namibia) heritage sites. CHwB’s Secretary General Margareta Husén shared CHwB’s experiences from sustainable local community development and cross border projects in the Balkans.
The workshop engaged a bottom-up planning approach where representatives of local people had the opportunity to express their needs. Policy makers, planners and authorities from regional and local governments and relevant members of civil society from the three countries also participated in the workshop.
Organizers:
The Africa World Heritage Fund (AWHF) in collaboration with Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), Botswana National Museum (Botswana) South African National Parks (South Africa), Namibia National Museum (Namibia), Khanya-African Institute for Community-Driven Development (South Africa), Cultural Heritage without Borders (Sweden).
