During the spring 2008 Republic Institute for Protection of Monuments Belgrade have started the preparations for a project on repair of two roofs on two vernacular churches in the Zlatibor region, Serbia. As the project documentation was already prepared, the next step was to find the good pin logs for hewing the shingles and for the parts of the roof construction.
The plan was to have all timber prepared for restoration works in the first two and a half months of project implementation. All the work on the shingle had to be manually done by craftsmen.

 

The restoration of the roof on one vernacular church in Zlatibor region was finalized at the end of September, while the restoration of the other church
is still ongoing and it is planned to be finalized in the spring 2009.

 

Future planning phase for the project is now being developed together with the Republic Institute for Protection of Monuments. New urgent priorities on roof repairs will be decided upon and the first planning documentation will be produced by responsible architect from Republic Institute for Protection of Monuments in Serbia. There are plans to organize an interactive workshop

in 2009, for professionals from Regional Serbian Institutes and young people from the village. The traditional technique will be discussed and there will be a hands-on training while all aspects of wood processing will be documented.
